A working-class young man, practically raised alone after his father’s repeated imprisonments for anarchist activities, fights to build a better life in 19th-century Italy. Metello Salani is determined to rise above his circumstances, but his ambitions become tangled with love, marriage, and the volatile politics of the era—complicating everything he hoped to achieve.
