After their arrests in the third season, Polly, Arthur, Michael, and John were released from prison. However, the family is fragmented. Michael returned to work for the Shelby Company, while John and Arthur bought country houses and tried to live quiet lives, and Polly has been haunted by the spirits of the dead. In Christmas 1925, the Shelby family receives a mysterious letter, and Tommy understands they are all in danger. Luca Changretta comes from New York to avenge his father's death. The Shelby family gathers in Small Heath, in Birmingham. All of them will have to put aside their dispute in order to fight together for their survival.
